"Woven Beech" by Andy Goldsworthy, i really like this image of one of his many sculptures i found in the book "Hand to Earth: Andy Goldsworthy sculpture 1976 - 1990" which was edited by Andy Goldsworthy and Terry Friedman.
I like the way he uses his chosen environment to create sculptures, using only materials found in this environment, this really brings out the charachter of the place and makes visitors wonder what the message behind the artwork is and give them that connection with the environment.

Goldsworthy experiments with many different natural, found materials to create his work. Some of his sculptures are made from cutting the materials in a way to form interesting shapes, i really like the spiral he has made out of the pebbles and the way he has made the cuts in the pebbles line up to form another spiral, the chalk really helps this to stand out aswel.
Andy Goldsworthys work is not meant to last, he spends hours creating beautiful pieces knowing that the elemnts within the settings he works in will take away what he has created. Therefore he uses photography to record his sculptures and these images are what is exhibited.
Through my development of ideas i found it hard thinking of how i could put my artist and object together to come up with a graphic response. I did lots of brainstorming and little sketches of ideas, and i tryed to make sure if anything came to my head i reported it in my sketchbook. At first, because Andy Goldsworthy works within natural settings with natural materials, i thought i would have to do the same. But then i thought it doesn't have to be so obvious, i could always aproach it in a different setting, Andy Goldsworthy is familiar with nature so his sculptures work well in this environment. So i thought i could create my work within my own familiar environment, suchas my student flat, using materials within this space to create my work.
I then thought about the materials in my flat i could use that i thought would be successful at creating a ladder. I decided i would experiment making different ladder shapes out of these and use photography to record these in my flat just like Goldsworthy does with his finished work within their settings.
Some of the photos i took recording my experiments:
I used a variety of different materials that would typicaly be found around my student flat environment like party straws, plastic cuttlery, toilet roll and different food. I feel they have worked quite well and i am especialy pleased with ladders made out of the toilet roll and straws i think these look the best.
